• The rideshare company has no liability during this period.

2. Period 1 (Driver Logged In, Waiting for a Ride Request)

• The rideshare company provides contingent liability coverage:
  • $50,000 per person for bodily injury.
  • $100,000 per accident for bodily injury.
  • $30,000 for property damage per accident.
• This coverage is secondary and only applies if the driver’s personal insurance denies the claim.

3. Period 2 (Driver En Route to Pick Up a Passenger)

• Once the driver accepts a ride request, the company provides:
  • $1 million in liability insurance for third-party injuries or property damage.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM) for passengers or the driver if the at-fault party lacks sufficient insurance.
  • Contingent comprehensive and collision coverage, which applies only if the driver has comprehensive/collision on their personal policy. Deductibles are usually around $2,500.

4. Period 3 (Passenger in the Vehicle)

• During this phase, the same coverage as Period 2 applies:
  • $1 million in liability coverage for third parties.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage for passengers and the driver.
  • Contingent comprehensive and collision coverage for vehicle damages.

Additional Notes

• Prop 22 (California): Following Proposition 22, which classified rideshare drivers as independent contractors rather than employees, TNCs are also required to provide additional benefits like limited medical coverage for injuries and loss of income if drivers are injured while on the job.
• Commercial Auto Insurance: The insurance policies provided by TNCs during Periods 2 and 3 are commercial in nature and comply with state requirements for rideshare operations.
